Formed in the summer of 2002 in New York City, Excepter, in the beginning consisted of DJs John Fell Ryan (vocals, synths, brake drum box, and electronics) and Dan Hougland (synths, brake drum box, electronics, and pianoforte) along with husband-and-wife yoke Calder Martin (vocals, guitar, and percussion) and Caitlin Cook (vocals and terpsichore), wHO all came together to explore the more than esoteric nature of sign of the zodiac and experimental music. Soon, Macrae Semans, world Health Organization had as well DJed in the New York clubhouse conniption, was added, and in 2003, their debut LP, Ka, was released on Fusetron. The side by side twelvemonth Semans left Excepter to enter in an M.F.A. programme at UCLA and was replaced by Nathan Corbin (synths, brake drum box, drums, and electronics), and in 2005 two more records, Ego Destruction and Commode, came out. That like twelvemonth the group fired Cook and Martin, added DJ Jon Nicholson, and began recording material for the Sunbomber EP, which Excepter commit out in 2006 on 5 Rue Christine.
